Getting There and Around
Getting There and Around
ARRIVAL AIRPORTS
The two major gateway cities for Wrexham are Manchester and London.
Manchester is by far the most convenient. The airport is on the southwestern side of the city, and a trip by train, car, or bus is around an hour.
Travel from London will vary significantly depending on your arrival airport, traffic, and whether you are traveling by car, bus, or train.
TRAIN
If you are limiting your travels to the sights in Wrexham, the train is most convenient, and you will can easily navigate the city by foot with or without taxis.
From Manchester:
The route from the Manchester Airport to Wrexham General involves a single transfer in Chester. The fastest and cheapest route is under an hour and costs $10-20. Be sure to book to Wrexham GENERAL when traveling from Manchester. Wrexham CENTRAL is not on the route from Chester, and therefore, attempting to book a ticket to Wrexham CENTRAL will just generate an extra leg to travel between the two stations in the city and an extra 1.5 hours in connections.
Wrexham General is conveniently located less than a mile from the Racecourse, City Center, and the two main hotels.
From London:
Use the Trainline website/app to plan your travels from London-area locations. The fastest and cheapest train from London-Heathrow to Wrexham will take approximately four hours and will cost just over $100.
Train Tickets:
Use the Trainline.com website/app to book all your UK train travel. It aggregates your search across all the different rail lines. Be aware that some tickets will be digital tickets, and others you will need to collect from the kiosks in the station. For Trainline.com Click Here
RENTAL CARS
If you plan to explore Wales beyond Wrexham and between the rail stops, you will likely need a car.
Renting a car is relatively straightforward. You just need an ID (passport or driver’s license) and a credit card. However, there are three significant factors to consider when making the decision:
Your ability to navigate UK roads. We rented from both Manchester and London-Heathrow airports and immediately drove away from the cities into Wales. Even in the smaller town, we found it challenging to navigate at times.
The price and availability of petrol. The vehicles are all fuel-efficient, so you likely won’t use a lot of fuel, but you will want to consider the cost when you budget your travels. The stations can also be hard to find when you need to fill up before returning the car, so be sure to map out your station by the return location before you start driving back.
Rental car insurance. I’m still not qualified to explain the options here, but you should definitely make sure you research your options (your own insurance, rental company options, credit card benefits, etc.) and have a plan before you travel.
RIDE SHARE and TAXIS
Wrexham - Ride share apps are NOT available. Taxis can be called by your hotel, restaurant, etc., if needed.
Cardiff and Swansea - Ride share apps, as well as taxis, are available within these cities in the South.
